Games NewsBANTAM GIRLS WIN NORTHERN ONTARIO CURLING TITLE
While teams continue to battle it out at the Northern Ontario Men’s Curling Championship underway at the Soo Curlers rink, the club is already celebrating another Northern Ontario win. The bantam girls team from Soo Curlers skipped by Leah Hodgson,vice-skip Katie Rutledge, second Laura Masters, and lead Shae-Lynne Dupuis won the Northern Ontario bantam girls provincial title on Sunday February 5th in Longlac Ontario. The local rink went 6-1 in round robin play, tied with the same record as the Guay team from Kapuskasing which had beaten the Hodgson rink in the round robin. In the sudden death playoff game it was very close until the sixth end when the Hodgson rink made a fantastic shot removing two of their opponent’s rocks and scoring five to seal the deal. This was Leah, Katie, and Laura’s second attempt at the Northern Ontario title, finishing second just a year ago with Amanda Mackenzie on the team. Shae-Lynne joined the Soo Curler team this past December when Amanda had to drop out because of her age. The top three teams from Northern Ontario will be participating in the Ontario Winter Games running March 8-10 in Collingwood, Ontario. The Hodgson team, coached by Jeff Manson, will be looking to beat the best top three teams from southern Ontario to claim the Ontario Winter Games title. Joining the Sault girls in Collingwood for the bantam boy’s competition will be the Scott Morphet rink from Soo Curlers which had a fantastic weekend of play in Fort Francis finishing second and narrowly missing out on a chance to play for the title. The team also includes Nick Servant, Mitchell Lemieux, and Brandon Acorn and fifth man Spencer Clark. The team’s coach is Kevin Morphet. Source: Sault Ste. Marie This Week |
